Goodwood is situated in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, only 10 km outside the Cape Town City Centre and easily accessible from three major highways. There are a few main Roads that run alongside and through Goodwood. The N1 Highway runs along the Goodwood border, the very busy Voortrekker Road runs through Goodwood and the Jakes Gerwel Drive is the main road that runs past the Grand West Casino.
Goodwood includes the suburbs of Tygerdal, Vrizjee, Goodwood West, Glenwood and Goodwood Park. The four schools in Goodwood are Fairbairn College, JG Meiring High School, Hoerskool President and Goodwood Park.
Originally established in 1905, the town was named after the Goodwood Racecourse in England as the founders intended to make it a horse racing center. A course was constructed there, but was abandoned after only one meeting. The first railway station was also built in 1905, and in spite of the failed racecourse, the area developed rapidly and achieved municipality status in 1938. Today there are three railway stations within the municipal area which are Goodwood, Vasco and Elsies River. The municipal area, now wholly within the wider Cape Metropole, was gradually extended to include the townships of Elsie’s River, Monte Vista, Epping and Edgemead.
Goodwood is home to Sun International’s architecturally lavish GrandWest casino and entertainment complex, with numerous restaurants, bars and shops, as well as a theatre, cinemas, night club and an ice rink. GrandWest is the only casino in the Western Cape and the opening of the casino has caused a rise in the popularity of Goodwood. Canal Walk, with over 400 shops is also located nearby in Century City. Another Shopping centre in the area is the N1 City shopping complex, situated along the N1 National Highway.
The close proximity of Goodwood to the Cape Town City Centre, has made it attractive among property buyers looking for an ideal home. Goodwood offers property buyers tree lined avenues, established parks and well built, affordably priced homes.
