Edgemead is located in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. The suburb lies at the foot of the Tygerberg hills and is one of several garden cities of South Africa. It is mainly residential, and as the name ‘garden city’ suggests, it is noted for its trees, gardens and generally pleasant environment. Edgemead is also only 20 km from the Cape Town City Centre and close to the Durbanville Wine Route, all contributing to making it a popular place to stay. Neighboring suburbs to Edgemead include Milnerton, Goodwood, Parow and Monte Vista.
It was not always a popular place to stay as Edgemead had humble beginnings as a suburb offering affordable housing for first-time buyers, during the 1970’s. Residents of Edgemead are today still benefitting from initial controls that included no overhead electricity or telephone wires. Residents were also not allowed to remove trees without permission and even advertising was strictly controlled.
The two schools in Edgemead are Edgemead Primary and Edgemead High. The Goodwood Centre of Excellence, a medium security prison run by the South African Department of Correctional Services, is based in Edgemead. This leafy suburb boasts a number of public open spaces and has many sporting clubs to choose from. Edgemead also has its own library.
The Grand West Casino featuring an ice rink, a children’s entertainment centre, a variety of restaurants, pubs, clubs and shops, is a popular attraction near Edgemead. This world-class casino has been designed in the style of historical Cape Town. Edgemead has a small shopping centre, but the Canal Walk and Tygervalley shopping centres are also situated conveniently close to Edgemead.
