About Century City
Century City is a suburb of Cape Town, structured as a mixed-use development which includes entertainment, residential, retail and office components. It is located 10km to the northeast of the Cape Town City Center, along the N1 highway. Century City is traversed by numerous waterways, wetlands and canals. It has become a sought-after address for corporate South Africa and home to a growing and thriving residential community.
The Ratanga Junction theme park and Canal Walk shopping centre, were the original developments in Century City. Canal Walk was the largest shopping mall in Africa when it was opened in December 2000. The mall contains over 400 stores, 20 movie theatres, many restaurants and bars and an entertainment section. The Ratanga Junction was a theme park that permanently closed in May 2018 and is set to be redeveloped for residential use.
Adjacent to Canal Walk are two eleven storey towers called the Crystal Towers. It is the largest development in Century City after Canal Walk. The development consists of a 5-star hotel with 180 rooms, as well as 91 luxury apartments and an office block. Two additional commercial developments in Century City is Century Gate and The Estuaries. The Colosseum situated in Century City is a mixed-use development and includes ground-floor cafes, offices, and a 70-room four-star hotel.
In the heart of Century City is Intaka Island, a 16-hectare wetlands conservation area that is rich in birdlife and indigenous plants. The wetland naturally cleans the water in the canals and provides a green lung in an otherwise high-density development. The reconstructed portion of Intaka Island has been opened to the public on a controlled basis and is becoming and important eco-tourism destination.
One of Century City’s greatest attractions for those living and working there is that it is a safe and secure precinct. The strategy of combining the use of cutting-edge technology with highly visible policing and rapid emergency response has proven very successful in curbing crime in Century City. A fiber based CCTV surveillance system with a network of the dome and fixed cameras cover the gateway entrances and common areas. The entire perimeter of Century City is walled or fenced and access is monitored through manned security control points at all gateway entrances.
The Golden Arrow Bus Service operates direct bus services to Century City from the Cape Town CBD, Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Killarney, Elsies River, Hanover Park and Atlantis. Alternative bus services operate to Montague Gardens along Bosmansdam Road and from there commuters can use the shuttle bus to get to their final destination in Century City. The MyCiti bus follows a similar route to the Century City Shuttle bus, and stops are located within walking distance of all e-Parking sites. The Century City Railway Station forms part of the Cape Town – Bellville Route. A collector road, adjacent and parallel to the N1 provides direct access from the freeway into the heart of Century City.
