Situated 16 kilometres to the north of the centre of Durban and ten minutes from the King Shaka Airport, Umhlanga is a residential, commercial and resort town on the coast of KwaZulu-Natal. It is part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality and is bordered by Mt Edgecombe to the west. Umhlanga means “place of reeds” in the Zulu language, referring to the beds of reeds growing along the Ohlanga River north of Umhlanga Rocks.
The Umhlanga Coastline starts at the Umgeni river bridge and just a kilometer down the road along the river lies the Umgeni Bird Park. Towards the north lies the suburb of Durban North offering a range of places to stay, vibey restaurants and a bustling business centre. The magnificent Umhlanga coastline and promenade stretching over 2.7km’s, provides outdoor lovers the opportunity to explore the coastline and exciting nature trails – all in a secure environment. Just 2 km’s inland from the Beach lies the world famous Gateway theatre of Shopping, with the beautiful Mount Edgecombe golf club 3kms further inland.
