AVTS Roadworthy Stations (Pty) Ltd is a privately owned operator of vehicle testing stations based in and around the Cape Peninsula in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.
It was originally established in 1992 as the Airport Vehicle Testing Station, the first private testing station in the Western Cape, and became well-known as a pioneer in the industry.
It employs 81 staff members of which 30 are qualified Examiners of Vehicles, at 7 branches. It has an operating capacity of 120 000 tests per annum. AVTS is licenced to operate test stations by being registered with the Provincial Government of the Western Cape. All the branches are wholly owned by AVTS, and it is the only group of test stations in the country, where its Head Office as well as each branch has achieved ISO 9001:2008 certification, and has maintained this status since November 2002.
When AVTS opened its doors in the early 90’s, it was the only operator, but at present, there are 55 private test stations operating in the Western Cape. This means that most test stations are operating under capacity. This growth in supply is as a result of the South African government’s plans to introduce the periodic testing of vehicles.
AVTS performs approximately 65 000 tests annually (including re-tests), of which one-third is on heavy vehicles (both goods and passengers), and the rest is on light motor vehicles.
