Owned and run by German chef Harald Bresselschmidt, Aubergine is a sophisticated, romantic restaurant in Cape Town which combines a rich history with contemporary style, innovative food and classic service – whether you’re joining us for lunch or dinner. Harald Bresselschmidt grew up on a dairy farm in the pristine Eifel Region of Germany, which instilled in him a love of the land and an appreciation for fresh produce. He started training as a chef in 1980, working in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland and London, before doing his Masters in Gastronomy and Cooking. He moved to South Africa in 1992, as Head chef for the Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl before completing a series of stages at Michelin-starred restaurants in France. In 1996, he opened Aubergine – and has been offering innovative food experiences ever since. The Aubergine chef team is made up of talented South Africans, many of whom were promising students at establishments like Infinity Culinary Training and Sense of Taste. Harald has trained his team in the art of fine dining by sharing his extensive experience to create opportunities for previously disadvantaged youngsters. 74 Waterkant Street, De Waterkant
Just two streets up from the well known Cape Quarter shopping centre in De Waterkant, one of the oldest parts of Cape Town, lies an unassuming, hidden gem called Café Charles. Neatly tucked away in the shade of an over hundred year old Brazilian Red Peppercorn tree, on the corner of Dixon and Waterkant Street, Café Charles entices you in with satisfying aromas of freshly brewed artisan coffee, free-range bacon and eggs, and crisp oven-baked croissants… and that’s just the beginning! Outdoor seating under the old peppercorn tree provides a beautifully shaded, relaxing space to eat, drink, meet and mingle. Sip on a velvety double-shot flat white, or delight in a glass (or two) of one of our small-batch boutique wines, while enjoying the soothing background sounds of the garden fountain. Go up a few steps onto the wrap around balcony of the historic early 18th Century Georgian style building for more bench seating shaded by umbrellas. A modest interior, classic furnishings and an authentic fireplace creates a quaint and cosy setting for coffee, conversations, and creative contemplations. Winter evenings are well spent here, savouring delectable dinner dishes in front of the fire. As for summer time, enjoy full sunshine […]

We make it daily to ensure ultimate freshness and only the best quality for our customers. “Healthy fresh food, fast” is what we are all about — sandwiches, wraps, salads, ciabattas, baguettes, smoothies, muffins, drinks, coffee…our menu is designed to be full of variety and tasty goodness, never venturing too far from that home-made flavour and feel. Our coffee is a unique 3 bean blend that our founders spent a great deal of time and effort to find, resulting in the perfect combination for our customer’s palate, and the easy-drinking, flavourful taste that we now have. Although we serve exceptionally good coffee, and quite a lot of it, we are best known for our lush and inviting food. Our food is fresh and prepared in our own kitchens every morning. At the end of the day, if any of these items still remain in the fridges, we offer them to those in need and start all over again the following morning. Restaurateur Ed Saunders (also involved with the excellent restaurant, Fork) has created an eatery in which the ambience and the food are cosy, home-from-home, as well as simply sophisticated; a bit like New York loft meets Deep South smokehouse. Don’t forget our Happy Hour, reduced price draught beer, house spirits and cocktails, 5-7pm daily. Knife is a sexy new American-style smokehouse, where you can tuck into the signature smoked meats, our special ribs, tender chicken, both simple and exotic seafood, or perfectly-grilled steaks. And with an open kitchen, so you can start salivating long before the food hits your table. But for all the sophistication, there is something that’ll tempt the whole family, with a menu full of delights, from appetizers to desserts to cocktails. In fact we’ve lavished quite a bit of attention on a special kids’ menu, as we love catering to the smaller set. We’re also happy for you to take some Knife with you, and have devised a takeaway menu for this purpose. The bar is custom-built for easy drinking and laid-back lounging, and also serves as the perfect perch from which to view a big game, or our classic, manly movies, while we ply you […]
